About thirty years ago,1983 to be exact, my wife and I were looking at purchasing a new home in Thornhill. We liked the house but as I looked out the front door I couldn't help but notice the hydro power lines about 275 metres away. I had remembered reading an article by an  epidemiologist Dr. Nancy Wertheimer and her coauthor physicist, Dr. Ed Leeper. This paper examined the relationship between high voltage power lines, transformer boxes and the incidence of childhood leukemia and brain cancer. The conclusion was that there was a doubling of the incidence of these two diseases within 141 feet of either of these entities. The threshold now considered to be able to bring about these results is a constant electromagnetic field above 2 mG (milliGauss) {ii}.
To put this into perspective, your clock radio that is probably less than three feet away from your head, gives off a electromagnetic field of approximately 10 mG and your hairdryer up to 500 mG. I called Ontario Hydro to come out with their Gauss Meter and check the field emanating from this line. They responded promptly and when we went out and stood under the line, the meter read 1100 mG. Wow! We started walking and about twenty-five paces away from the line the reading dropped to 1.1 mG. It was 1.1 mG everywhere I checked which included at least a kilometer in every direction. Apparently EMFs are everywhere. In the last year, the world-wide media has been filled with seeking the conclusive dose-response relationship linking electromagnetic radiation and cell phone use to a number of diseases and my book 'The Invisible Threat' has gone through the third printing.

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is unavoidable and certainly there is an established relationship between, cancer, leukemia, hormonal dysfunction, miscarriage and a plethora of negative effects on the central nervous system, the immune system and right down to the cellular membrane. {iii, iv, v, vi, vii} EMR initially affects neurological tissue and the largest collection of this tissue is the brain, with the spinal cord being second, both significant parts of the body that we rely on. Consider the fact that EMR has been documented to affect neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease). {viii, ix, x.} Enter the most likely omnipresent contributing factor: cell phones and wireless technology. Dr. Devra Davis' newly released book, "Disconnect,' also exposes the industry cover-up about the discrediting of reputable science, as well as the real threat. {xi}

electro-2It is well documented that cell phones, introduced as a three pound 'brick' in 1983, which emit electromagnetic fields, in conjunction with the carrier waves and the actual information transmitted, can cause genetic damage, aberrant brain wave activity and even changes to cerebral blood flow including altering the permeability of the blood brain barrier. As a matter of fact the work of Professors, Dr. Henry Lai (University of Washington) and Dr. Martin Blank (Columbia University), have both shown EMR to damage DNA. {xii, xiii}   Since those initial findings, the association and dose-relationships between cell phones and disease place cell phone users into a high risk health group.xiv Cell phone usage can cause DNA damage, headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, short term memory loss, neuralgias, tumors, and sleep disturbances to name a few.  {xv, xvi, xvii, xviii,xix,xx,xxi.}

Dr. V. Khurana, a neurosurgeon from Australia published the findings of his study in February 2008 on the alarming increase in the number of brain tumours due to the increasing electromagnetic radiation in our environment, which he proposed are primarily due to cell phone usage although he added that all wireless radio frequency radiation had a contributing factor.xxii He stated adamantly, "The link between cell phones and brain cancer can no longer be considered to be a myth. {xxiii} The bottom line is this: Electromagnetic radiation from all sources is bio-accumulating and we really don't know the total impact it will have over the long term. If we believe those researchers such as engineer Dr. Lloyd Morgan, cell phone users may be facing the same etiology as cigarette smokers: 10% will succumb to some aspect of radiations effects. Dr. Charles Teo, an Australian neurosurgeon, states that when we radiate tissue in order to eradicate a tumour, there is a likely chance that we will cause one… ten years later. There are some interventions that we can employ to decrease the impact and those of us who are prudent will adopt these actions. I know you can't tell me that electromagnetic radiation is safe, but can you tell me that it isn't dangerous.
