Sports Injuries
Dr. H and son Kurt with Baseball "Hit King" legend Pete Rose in Las Vegas, 9/07. Rose is a chiropractic patient and loves the profession. Rose played from 1963 to 1986, best known for his many years with the Cincinnati Reds. Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time major-league leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at bats (14,053), and outs (10,328). He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at a mind bending five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B, and 1B)!
Sports injuries can be a very real problem for all athletes. If you are a sportsman or sportswoman, you have probably suffered from at least one of the following conditions at some time:
strains, sprains, tendinitis, bursitis, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, frozen shoulder, back pain, neck pain— the list goes on and on.
Chiropractic— particularly sports chiropractic— can be of enormous benefit in treating and preventing sports-related injuries and improving athletic performance, as many world-class athletes can attest. Dr. Haberstroh is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician.
Dr. Allan Oolo Austin, Ph.D. is a chiropractor and a Certified Rehab Doctor as well as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. He worked the recent Olympics and is THE Estonian Team chiropractor. He is also a specialist in Trigenics. More and more, we are seeing chiropractors working with pro teams and Olympians. As a matter of fact, George LeBeau, DC from Vista, California, is the Team Chiropractor of the U.S. Olympic Team.
Dr. Haberstroh with Philadelphia 76er Legend and Basketball Hall of Famer, Julius "Dr. J" Erving at the Basketball Hall of Fame 6/05. Erving is a chiropractic enthusiast. (He's not THAT tall!) Erving had one of the most storied careers in basketball history: he first joined the ABA where he won 2 championships, 2 MVPs and was a 5 time all star. He switched over the NBA in 1976 with Philly and won a championship in 1983, MVP award in 1981, became an 11 time NBA All Star, 2 time NBA All Star Game MVP and retired having scored 30,026 combined points-3rd all time.
Pro-Sports: One of the first athletes to use chiropractors was Dwight Stone. He was a gold medal winning Olympic high jumper who used chiropractic and loved it so much he told the entire world on a regular basis. This in turn, led to the U.S. Olympics finally maintaining a team of olympic chiropractors for ALL of the athletes. Most American Pro teams either have a chiropractor on staff or, many of the players go to a local chiropractor for treatment of back aches, shoulder sprains, neck pain, sciatica and other common conditions that many of us have. Baseball was one of the last of the major team sports to start utilizing chiropractic care but once MLB started, there was no looking back. Many of today's stars swear by their chiropractor.
Dr. H with Boston Celtic Legend and Hall of Famer John “Hondo” Havlicek at the Boston Garden. Called “the guts of the Celtics,” Havlicek was a 13 time All-Star, all time Celtic points leader scoring 26,395 in his career and he led the Celtics to 8 World Championships.
Famed left handed, Hall of Fame Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton was so dedicated to his chiropractor, that when he needed treatment, he flew to St. Louis to see his first chiropractor-no matter where he was in the country. And this, despite the fact that he had been traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Philadelphia Phillies at one point.
Dr. H with his karate instructor, Master Sensei legend Steve Nugent. Steve is a 4 time World Champion in KENPO karate, holds an 8th Degree Black Belt and is a direct student of Grand Master George Pesare. His main school is in Burlington, MA. www.stevenugentskarate.com
Martial artists have traditionally embraced chiropractic care as a means of restoring the body to optimum condition. Karate Grand Master Bruce Lee was among the many early adherants to the chiropractic/wholelistic lifestyle in the martial arts. Lee set the tone for martial artists ever after by remaining open minded to all forms of both karate and the healing arts. Chiropractic is effective in correcting misplaced vertebrae in the spine of martial artists after the ballistic effects of the many styles of karate, Brazilian grappling, Akido, wrestling and so forth. Kenpo Master Nugent is another "believer." He wouldn't think of competing now without a thorough exam and chiropractic adjustment before a tournament.
What about you and me? Sports injuries and rigorous athletic conditioning, typically disturb normal body mechanics. These minor and/or major disturbances may negatively affect athletic performance. Because of the expertise and extensive training in neuro-musculo-skeletal conditions, sports chiropractic physicians are uniquely skilled in treating the athlete. Doctors of Chiropractic, especially sports chiropractic physicians, are sensitive to joint dysfunction. In the past decade or so, there has been a huge upswing in NON-CONTACT injuries. This is a singularly unique paradigm owing to the high conditioning of athletes in general and larger weights and signficiantly larger muscles most athletes now have compared to before the 1990's. When a joint is dysfunctional, there are also disturbed neurological reflexes which may result in poorly communicated information to the central nervous system. These diminished reflexes may result in slowed reaction time or may cause muscles to be dysfunctional; tight or inhibited. Numerous studies demonstrate enhanced mechanics of a joint in addition to enhanced nervous system function immediately following chiropractic manipulation.
